Effects of Kaolin Additives in Fly Ash on Sintering and Properties of Mullite Ceramics

The effective utilization of fly ash (FA) as a raw material for ceramics production is performed on the FA-kaolin mixtures containing kaolins 10% by mass. in comparison with FA and three were annealed to mullite at temperatures 1000, 1100, 1200 1300 °C. main aims contribute discussion effect impurity Na,K-feldspars Fe2O3 sintering procedure, porous properties structural properties. phases characterized using X-ray diffraction thermogravimetry DTA/TGA methods. Mercury intrusion porosimetry was used characterization porosity ceramic samples. Results evidenced influence feldspars ceramics. fully FA-based sintered 1100 °C exhibited post-sintering bulk density 2.1 g/cm3; compressive strength 77.5 MPa; porosity, 2% FA/kaolin-based 2.2 strength, 60–65 from 9.3 16.4% influenced Na,K-feldspars. best mechanical characteristics found FAK3 sample, supported high content kaolinite orthoclase kaolin K3 additive. good 87.6 MPa 10.6% 2.24 g/cm3 41.3 19.2% 1.93 g/cm3.
